In September 1998 the Foundation Emelisse was founded with the aim to promote the North Beveland region of The Netherlands.
One of their goals was brewing a traditional beer with locally grown malting barley. In 2005, a private brewery was built which was officially opened on October 29th that same year. There is close collaboration with the Scheldebrouwerij, where Bierbrouwerij Emelisse sources their bottles.
The brewing unit at Bierbrouwerij Emelisse has two copper stills with a brewing capacity of 1000 liters. In addition there are twelve lower tanks with a capacity of 160 hectolitres. In 2012, the brewery increased their capacity yet again with two additional lower tanks of 30 hectoliters each. What started as brewing for local cultural expression has expanded into a line of Dutch beers that are desired the world over.
