Shipyard Brewing was founded in Portland, Maine in 1994 by Fred Forsley and Alan Pugsley. Alan Pugsley had trained at the Ringwood Brewery in Hampshire, England before immigrating to the United States. Using that knowledge, Alan and Fred were able to make Shipyard the fastest growing craft brewery in America by 1996. Today Shipyard is Maine’s largest brewery, with an annual output of over 160,000 barrels per year. One of Shipyard’s most iconic brews is their Pumpkinhead, a fall seasonal beer that has been brewed since 1996; Pumpkinhead took home 1st place from the California Brewer’s Festival in 2007. Shipyard has never been willing to sacrifice quality for quantity, and their beers have taken home awards from European Beer Star, Los Angeles County Fair, California Brewer’s Festival, Australian International Beer Awards, UK International Beer Championship, Stockholm Beer & Whiskey Festival, World Beer Championships, and the United States Beer Tasting Championship, to name a few.
