Following the legalization of home brewing in Oregon in 1979, Kurt and Rob Widmer realized they wanted to brew beer themselves. A few years later, they quit their jobs and set about starting a brewery. Widmer Brewing Company officially opened their doors on April 2, 1984 in Portland, Oregon, and over the next few years grew to popularity in Portland and Oregon in general. By 1996, they had grown to being the largest draft-only brewery in the nation, and started bottling their beers. Always remembering their craft roots, the Widmer brothers continue to remain engaged in their local community to this day, while never sacrificing quality or originality in their beer. Widmer Brewing is an active member of the Portland recycling organization, and boasts a 99.4% landfill diversion rate along with a program that utilizes spent grain and waste beer as cattle feed with local ranchers. For their 30 year history, Widmer Brewing has been recognized near and far for their tasty beers, and most recently their Dry Top Amber beer took home the Gold Medal in the Ordinary Bitter category of the 2013 North American Beer Awards.
