Woodchuck Hard Cider was founded in 1990 in Proctorsville, Vermont, as an offshoot of a local winery. After tasting their cider creation, the winery became a cidery, known as “Woodchuck Cider,” as ‘woodchuck’ was a local term for long-time Vermonters. After debuting their first cider in 1991, by 1996 Woodchuck was doing half a million cases in business annually, leading a revival in popularity of cider, and needed to expand.
Expanding their production and distribution beyond Vermont and the nearest-reaches of New England, after a few years another expansion was needed, and the cidery was moved to its current location of Middlebury, Vermont. In 2007, Woodchuck became the first cider in America to sell over 1,000,000 cases in a single year. Woodchuck also has a commitment to the environment that has given them the ingredients that they use to make their cider, with all packaging coming from 100% recyclable materials, and all printing occurring on recycled materials. In addition, Woodchuck has partnered with American Forests, and as of 2013 had planted 42,033 trees in areas devastated by wildfire in California.
From being virtually the only name in the cider game to leading a new category of alcoholic beverage, Woodchuck has been the cider standard for over 20 years.
