Last month the annual Great American Beer Festival was held in Colorado. Thousands upon thousands of beers were submitted in varying categories but only a handful came out on top. Many award-winning beers were created by some of our great brewery partners. So what award winning beers do we have in our lineup? Keep reading to find out!
Tankbeer, Hopewell Brewing Co., Chicago, IL: Bronze
Category: Kellerbier or Zwickelbier
Located right in Logan Square, Hopewell Brewing is dedicated to making bright, clean, modern beer. Their award winning Tankbeer is the absolute best representation of what Hopewell Brewing is as a whole. An unfiltered lager with notes of dough and hop spice, Tankbeer is a standard in craft beer and their recent win at the Great American Beer Festival absolutely proves it.
Trumer Pils, Berkeley, CA: Bronze
Category: German Style Pilsner
We fly from Chicago to Berkeley, California for our next winner. Trumer Pils is correctly named “The World’s Most Awarded Pilsner” winning countless medals in various beer competitions over the past 19 years. That extends to last month as Trumer Pils wins yet another medal at the Great American Beer Festival in Colorado.
So what makes Trumer Pils so special? It’s their dedication to “Reinheitsgebot”, or German Beer Purity Law, for over 400 years. Meaning they keep their ingredients simple: just water, malt, hops, and yeast. Because the ingredients are minimal, they are ritualistic to how it is crafted, and the end result is award winning beer – like winning bronze at the GABF.
Kolsch, Best Day Brewing, Sausalito, CA: Bronze
Category: Pale Non-Alcohol Beer
The award winners also expand into the non-alcoholic category as well! We stay in California and go to Sausalito to Best Day Brewing. Here, the brewers show what craft beers can be without the alcohol by crafting non-alcoholic beers that taste as great as their alcoholic counterparts – and they have the awards to prove it. Their Kolsch is very light and easy drinking, but has the full character profile of a traditional Kolsch beer.
Patagonia Provisions Non-Alcoholic Kernza Golden Brew, Deschutes Brewery, Bend, OR: Gold
Category: Specialty Non-Alcohol Beer
Our final award winning beer takes us to the state of Oregon, as Deschutes Brewery collaborated with Patagonia to create a non-alcoholic lager. Kernza® Golden Brew is created with its namesake grain – a special type of wheatgrass grown as a multi-functional crop with many environmental benefits. The ingredients in Kernza® Golden Brew are Regenerative Organic Certified® (ROC™) and organic, making the final product a refreshing non-alcoholic beer brewed with a mission to move the industry towards more responsible practices. That, to me, make this beer absolutely worthy of gold.
