Brooklyn Mash is a week-long traveling festival full of parties, art, comedy, screenings, panel discussions, pop-up supperclubs, all featuring everyone’s favorite brewery. We followed Brooklyn Brewery all around Chicago last week, including the State of Craft Beer event & Brooklyn Limited with Barley’s Angels Chicago, and ended the festive week at Thalia Hall for a free concert and party.
Brooklyn Brewery beers, like Summer Ale, ½ Ale and Blast!, flowed while guests enjoyed tunes from Chicago’s Storm Clouds and the night’s headliner, hailing from West Palm Beach, Surfer Blood, sponsored by Timberland. We sat down to have a chat with Brooklyn Brewery Marketing Director Ben Hudson on Mash Chicago, what exactly Mash Bash is and what we can look forward to from them.

After an introduction from Michael Kiser of Good Beer Hunting, Brooklyn Brewery co-founder Steve Hindy moderated the panel discussion between John and Ben Saller, founders and head brewers at Atlas Brewing Company, Erin Lowder, Eric McNeil of Aquanaut Brewing and John Holl, editor of All About Beer.
Brooklyn Brewery’s Brooklyn Mash kicked off with a bang last night at the Brooklyn Limited event with Barley’s Angels Chicago. We got to share some special beers with the Barley’s Angels and hear from Brooklyn Brewery’s chef Andrew Gersen.
I pulled Brooklyn Brewery’s copywriter, Tim Rozmus aside for a quick chat about the brewery, the beer and the Mash tour.
In some ways, Chicago’s Atlas Brewing Co has two personalities. On the one hand, they brew beers like Diversey Pale Ale, Rookery Rye IPA and Farmhouse Wheat, which are super-consistent, approachable, every day beers. But they also have a line of constantly changing specialties created at their brewpub in Lincoln Park that allow them to flex their creative muscles.

Late July means two things in Chicago: heat and Pitchfork Music Festival. Last weekend, both descended upon the west side’s Union Park for three days of music, which included both up-and-coming bands and festival circuit veterans. The 10th edition of the Pitchfork Music Festival wasn’t all smooth sailing though as torrential thunderstorms resulted in a brief closure of the festival, but when the rain moved on, Pitchfork Fest reopened and the rest of the weekend was a little steamy but clear and sunny.
